Monitoring the Night

Red light preserves night vision while recording SQM values.Since 2006, AstroCampers who have stayed up late have measured the darkness over Corey Lake with digital Sky Quality Meters (SQMs).  These hand-held devices quantify how much light is reaching our eyes, both from the stars themselves and from light pollution.  Average SQM values, measured in magnitudes per square arcsecond (what we affectionately call "squims"), are shown below.  An ideal dark site would be about 21 or 22, whereas a light-polluted sky would be 17 or 18.
